The great fruit debate

We recently got into a bit of a disagreement on the podcast because I said peanuts in a nut mix were the equivalent of peaches in a fruit cocktail. Both Adam and Bryan corrected me and said I meant pears. I said I thought pears and peaches were kind of neck-and-neck. This didn’t go over well.

Evidently everyone knows pears are total bullshit.

Well the sun may have set on that particular episode but the debate has moved over to twitter.

I can’t even believe you would compare mixed nuts to fruit cocktail! Do you have something against mixed nuts?

What about that saying life is a peach, or your a peach? right? Peachy keen. not pear keen.

‘Have to side with you on the pears issue regarding fruit cocktail. Peaches in that mix are fine, but, contrary to Adam’s assertion, have no “bite”… whereas pears are nothing but real, fruit goodness. (I know that last bit had to come from some food company’s ad that had lodged itself in the NES region of my brain).

I love pears. Best part of a fruit cocktail, other than the grape of course.

Pears are just uppity apples, if you ask me.

  7. Christoforo April 18, 2011 at 2:54 pm #

The pears are my favorite part and the peaches are indeed filler; look at the pears to peach ratio.

I actually eat all the peaches first so that I can enjoy the rest of the fruit cocktail.

I like the taste of pears much better than peaches but the texture does leave little to be desired. In terms of in a cocktail I guess I cant really say. Given the choice between eating a fresh pear or peach I choose the pear.

I’m here to defend the honor of pear trees everywhere. There’s nothing wrong with a nice pear. You should eat one. They’re delicious.

Anyway, it’s fruit cocktail that sucks. Especially out of a can. All the fruit slices are mere shades of their former selves by the time you eat them, and peaches can get pretty damn disgusting sometimes. I don’t want to eat a slug whether it’s sweet or not.

Personally, I prefer the larger fruit salad, where you have more room to go to town with the selection, and you’re more likely to get fresh fruit.

Don’t back down Alison! You’re in the right!

Fresh peaches rock, but in canned fruit cocktail, they totally blow.

  12. TS April 18, 2011 at 3:55 pm #

I like peaches better than pairs, but feel pears are worth standing up for. IIRC Bryan made a point that they were “filler” fruit in general, since they are a lower tier on the hierarchy of fruit. While he is correct in the sense that there is rarely a pear pie or a pear cobbler, I can’t remember the last time I had an orange pie or a grape cobbler, either. So while a pear has fewer applications than other others, it is still substantial as a fruit.

    Thank you, and good day.

How dare you besmirch the good name of peaches! The problem is that pears have a pretty low batting average. You can sometimes get a pretty good one, but 9 times out of 10 your going to get one that is mealy and bland. Peaches, however are almost always awesome. If you were to have a deliciousity competition between a great peach and a great pear, the peach would win every time, with our without skin. Side note: The peach is no match for the blueberry, which is rivaled only by the strawberry in the great fruit debate.

There is no pear cobbler. There is no pear schnapps. There is a reason for that. Pear < Peach. Case closed!

Yeah, it may seem like low-hanging fruit (oh, you got me–pun intended!), but you might want to ask Adam and Bryan what the hell kind of man has *any* kind of opinion on fruit salad in the first place. It ain’t exactly up there with steak on the hetero-ometer, you know (that said, I eagerly await their views on the proper formulation of ambrosia!).

Pears and peaches are both awesome.

Fruit cocktail/ That isn’t as good as any component in it.

Lets just say the best pears are too smart to be caught in a fruit cocktail. Whats the peaches’ excuse?

  17. Michaeljack20 April 18, 2011 at 5:09 pm #

How about peanuts are to nut mix what cantelope is to fruit salad? Both are cheap fillers that people pick around.

i love pears. theyre sweet, yet mild. on their own they are deeelightful. BUT……….as far as the fruit cocktail goes, definitely not as good as the peaches. sorry babydoll

First off, canned fruit cocktail blows, to be eaten only when there is nothing else in the cupboard.

In a sense, you are correct in comparing peaches in fruit cocktail to peanuts in mixed nuts in terms of quantity.
More peaches than any other fruit, more peanuts than any other nut.

In terms of QUALITY, however, a peach will punch out a pear in the first round. Every time.

Alison is wrong, but you are a good man Trappy, for being supportive! The thing I love about Alison is that she’s smart, but sometimes has no idea what she’s talking about when it comes to fruit cocktails.

Sorry I’m late, I agree with Alison and not just because I’m a groupie. Let me explain, I’m a mango man and every thing else is beneath them therefore placing peaches and pears as equals only makes sense. The other argument is that it’s like comparing apples to oranges. Come on people, what the hell is going on that you missed that obvious comparison?

Grapes make up over half of Ralph's fruit cocktail, and are a distusting faded green colour.  They look spoiled.  Any one have a recommendation of a passable fruit cocktail canned.
