Matt Nathanson and I went to college together and as I confess to him early on in this episode, I’ve come to feel like he and I are on similar journeys in life. It’s an incredibly squishy and drippy thing to say and if I read it or overheard it, I’d probably roll my eyes. And yet here I am, coughing it up for you right here and also on the podcast. Back in the day (and also on the tenth episode of my podcast on which he guested) we fought good-naturedly about all sorts of stuff with the exception of the couple of times it felt not so good-natured. But these days we totally get along. On this episode we talk about ego states, parenthood, the necessity of being totally honest if you’re an artist, fame, poetry, Matt’s childhood and boarding school experience, his new album, infidelity, his family, his relationship with his parents, the Taylor Swift Incident, Bill Murray and so much more. On Saturday night, Jenna and Al had all of us over to their new place for an extra-curricular hangout and we had a blast. On this episode, Daniel, Greg, Jeff, Jenna, Al and I recounted the festivities complete with Greg’s assessment of Jenna and Al’s avocado tree, pistol racking, more dirty diet coke talk, spear-fishing, Greg’s car troubles, whether women can be creepy or not, Jenna’s due date, what truly happens when you give birth, being skeptical of real estate agents, whether we should all move to bumblefuck and so much more. Writer and comedian Josh Gondelman (Last Week Tonight, Billy on the Street, New Yorker) traveled all the way from New York to be on my podcast and while he was in town he stopped by the Emmys. This was supposed to be our spooky Halloween-themed episode and it started that way, with horrifying talk of my new obsession with Dirty Diet Cokes and some riveting Gal Chat regarding nails but but then talk turned to Greg’s unanswered questions about how I met Daniel and then how Greg met his wife and how Al first described Jenna to his parents and it became a very romantic Halloween show.  But then we Halloween’d it up again with a shocking revelation about Almond Joy and Mounds, agent dating, jealousy, course titles, costumes, avocados and a scary round of Halloween-themed Just Me Or Everyone.

Michael Showalter and I go way back to 2006-ish when I did a series of interviews for Time Out New York/PS1 Radio (they were very early podcasts, actually) and he was the first person I interviewed. Over the years I’ve interviewed him many more times and I always love talking with him, probably because I’m such a huge fan of his work from The State to Wet Hot American Summer to Stella and now Neftlix’s Wet Hot American Summer First Day of Camp (not to mention The Baxter and Mr. Funny Pants and all the projects I’m forgetting). It was fascinating to find out how he regards his own success and how the Netflix series, he says, “changed the narrative.” Also he recently made a film called Hello My Name is Doris starring Sally Field and Max Greenfield and it was heartbreaking and beautiful. We also talked hypnotherapy (I was inspired to make an appointment after our conversation), kids, NY work ethics vs. LA work ethics (and the cultural differences in general), cats, tennis and sportiness. Plus we took your questions over twitter and did a round of Just Me Or Everyone. (BTW, still trying this thing where I write the episode summaries in EXTREME FIRST PERSON. Is it still working?
