ARIYNBF 113 with Janet Varney

Janet Varney, comedian, actor, voice over actor, producer, writer and host of The JV Club podcast on The Nerdist stopped by this episode of Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend to chat about why “real life” can feel like high school, Mormon summer camp, “borrowing” garments from the drama department, high school crushes, dancing and mirror faces and a zillion more things. We also did a round of JMOE (click here to see the JMOEs we put on the screen) and Alfred Schulz called in with Things You Never Hear People Say. Plus Topic Sombrero, iTunes Comment of the Week and your emails.

Also please love the hell out of our sponsors! What sponsors you ask? You can get to all of them from the sidebar on this page but also you can do it here by going to  Amazon (clear your cookies first and what the hell, make a bookmark!), Endless and new sponsor alert, Shari’s Berries! I think this was the best podcast episode yet. Janet's description of her relationship with her former best friend and plutonic love interest was vivid and visceral and reminded me of sections of Jennifer Egan's A Visit from the Goon Squad, which is a damned good book. Great show.

It's very clear that at some point these two will be kissing. And bundling. I am so cool with that.
    Got to get it on!
     MANDATE!!!
     Get! It! On!
Studio lighting, low key. Ducks. Imprinting sessions. This stuff writes itself.

*Platonic, not plutonic. Unless her friend was composed of cooled magma, which I doubt. Though, that would be awesome. Lava Girl!

Smart chicks are HOT!! Keep interviewing smart chicks please! Also, Gary is great to present the male perspective because almost every time he talks, I feel like he is saying what I feel. I am also a male. Maybe we need a segment where just Gary says stuff, and call it “Gary says some stuff!”

This is actually one of the reasons I enjoy this podcast so much.  I know this sounds sick, but I enjoy hearing women open up to each other and get to exactly what's on their minds, what's important to them, what they think of us, etc.  This was definitely one of the best episodes of ARIYNBF, and I generally prefer ARIYNBF to the Ace Show.

I assumed the logo was Alison showing the rubber pencil trick to a baby duck.  Perhaps to blow its mind.

Hey Alison, ever since that James Gunn episode, I thought that I agree, you should just ask someone out if you like them, cuz what's the worse that can happen?  They say no.  So what, right?  Then I thought about all the years I went thru life just not asking guys out that were in my class or who I worked with that I thought were cute or whatever, besides thinking “hey why doesn't HE ask ME out?”  My advice to anyone is to just date, date a lot.  How else will you know what you like?  So ask people out, if you're a girl or guy, who knows what can happen!  Maybe not before college, but I think people need to just get into the mindset of dating so they can experience it, ya know?
