Regarding your search for a new dog, please at least consider rescuing a dog from a shelter. You won't regret it. Plus, you can get pretty much anything you want – a specific breed or a mixed breed. If you're so inclined, mutts are the BEST. For the most part, mutts are genetically superior to purebreds due to less inbreeding and greater genetic diversity. The result is a healthier dog with fewer medical and behavioral problems. If your heart is set on a specific breed, many are available in rescue shelters. Plus, there are now rescue organizations specific for almost every breed. Whatever you do, do NOT purchase a purebred dog from a large chain pet store. Many obtain their inventory from so-called puppy mills where the dogs are extremely inbred (even more so than those from more conscientious dog breeders). The bottom line is there are way too many dogs being bred. In 2005 (the most recent statistics I could find), LA County Animal Care and Control euthanized 18,503 dogs, or 46% of all dogs they took in. And this is just one of the many shelters in your area. Sorry for the rant, but it's something I feel strongly about. Good luck in your search for a new pal, and please keep us posted on your excellent podcast (which i listen to religiously). In closing, GO MUTTS!

Yep! We're considering a shelter dog, just want to get a better sense of what we're looking for first.

Alison, google “what dog breed for lifestyle” and get an idea for what breeds will indeed fit your lifestyle. If you like to hang out and relax in your apartment, something like a Bassett Hound would be a better choice than say a Jack Russel or a Lab that needs a lot of exercise. Then, just hit the local shelters and humane societies and see and interact with those breeds that you think you are interested in. Petfinder will show what humane societies in your area have those breeds and save you a lot of running. Being a dog owner is a big commitment, but super rewarding. Rock on!

I hope you get a mutt because … I am a mutt, and if you choose a mutt, I will feel it will remind you of me!!

    Alison,
I love the show, but I hate the two part format.  The end of
the first part is always jarring. I'm never looking at my ipod hoping
the episode is close to being done. Then it takes a couple minutes to
get back into the mindset of what was going on for part two. Boo! Hiss!

    I
am now waiting for Thursday to listen to your show. It is a small
adjustment for me, but I will love your show that much more if I do
    this.

    P.S.
I know you will hate this comment, but I posted it
despite liking you and your show.  I am not a troll and don't want to
give you indigestion. I just want longer episodes.

    P.P.S.
    You mentioned a possible change
to two episodes per week…I'll listen to and support up to seven shows
per week so long as they are all individual episodes. If it is one
episode broken into seven parts, I will listen, but not support!  I bet
that doesn't read as funny as it felt typing it. I'll go prefuck myself.

    P.P.P.S.
A few more episodes of just you and Gary would be great.

Hey Nathaniel… we are commenting on dogs here. You may want to consider reposting this comment in a place where no dogs will be harmed by all of those PS's   😀

    Alison,

Just started listening to this episode and rushed home to send you this message. Please x1,000 do not buy a puppy from a pet store; they support puppy mills. Definitely rescue is preferable, and even if you want a specific breed there are breed specific rescues. If you absolutely must buy a pup choose a reputable breeder by checking with the AKC.
BTW love your show and wish there was more than one a week 🙂
