ARIYNBF 121 with Jim Norton

The delightful (and by delightful I mean perverted) Jim Norton stopped by this episode of Alison Rosen Is Your New Friend to discuss his new stand up special Jim Norton: Please Be Offended, juicy butts, bathing routines, relationships, anger, sobriety and a lot of other stuff including our mutual love of Alan Alda. Jim is the author of Happy Endings and I Hate Your Guts and a regular on Opie and Anthony,  Red Eye and the Tonight Show. In this episode we also discussed Things You Never Hear People Say with Alfred Schulz and did a round of Just Me Or Everyone (click here to see the JMOEs we put on the screen) and Topic Sombrero. AND MORE.

related: here’s a photo from when I read Jim’s book a couple year’s ago

Here’s the video of Jim approaching NOT Nick Jonas that we talked about in the episode:

Alison Rosen is the Mary Tyler Moore of this generation, shes breathtaking, funny, smart and un like Mary Tyler Moore can play bass, maybe thats why shes aware of Les Claypool, the Angoras are great because they did not  latch on  to the current trend, they have a good  sense of music and what people, need to here but, have no sense of anything else because there radio will not provide it………….Im sure I misspelled Everything.

There was a time not long ago when I used to tell everyone that Jim Norton and Alison would make a really cute couple. The picture above just proves to me that I am 100% right. It's too bad that they never hooked up… as far as we know.

In a throwaway comment, Alison wondered if men like ass because it reminds them of breasts.  I've read before that it's actually the other way around.  I'll let cracked.com explain:

Boy, today's podcast could not be more timely for me.  I'm on “day one” of my sobriety.  I have been prescribed Antabuse, which will make me stay on the wagon.  Anyway, I have stuggled with this addiction for about four years, resulting in a lot of alcohol, sex, meaningless relationships, all the while so deserate to fill a void.  Hearing you and Jim talk so openly, really makes me feel I'm not alone in all of this confusion.  Thank you, both.  And Alison, I do feel like you're my new best friend! 🙂

Why is it that when a chick plays or played in a band, that people sometimes mistakenly think the chick is the bass player? This never happened on the Muppets with their band

It bums me out how alcohol is such a crucial part of socializing for many people.  Their whole night seems to revolve around it.  They can't possibly have a good time without being in an altered state of mind.  I attempted to quit drinking this year but only made it to March.  It's tough to stay on the wagon when your friends start treating you differently and stop inviting you out.  Props to Jim for staying sober all these years, and good luck to you Betsy.

    Hey Alison,
Listened to your show specifically for Jim Norton, and was not disappointed.  There's no comparison with his appearance on your show vs. Adam's, and I was particularly impressed with how you opened yourself up to match Jim's openness.  It rivals Maron's interview with Jim because of your willingness to expose yourself.  Fantastic.  Keep it up, I'll keep listening.

  33. Jim July 3, 2012 at 3:28 am #

Has anyone heard Norton's stand up? Is he actually funny or just the same eyebrowless lesbian trucker talking about his dirty spot. And the audience for this is who?

A little late, but I just wanted to chime in and point out that it was hilarious that your guests (and friends!) left you hanging out to try about your “number”, during the last live show.  I'm sure it didn't seem so at the time, but it was gold.

Alison, your podcasts make me squirm…they often come off as Adam's post podcast sloppy-second guest therapy sessions. They tend to stray into creepy territory and you do tend to put yourself out there too far (in my opinion). I always feel like “I shouldn't be listening to this.” …Kinda like Adam's rants about people oversharing.  On a related note, I would've loved to see Jessie Ventura fold Jim Norton into a pretzel…then piss on him (much to that little troll's delight).

  39. TrappDog July 3, 2012 at 12:49 pm #

I think Janice played guitar and Floyd played bass. Wouldn't it be great if we got in a big argument over the Muppets' band?

  40. TrappDog July 3, 2012 at 12:56 pm #

I'm glad Jim Norton referenced his appearance at the Gene Simmons roast. He was so great there. One of the best bits I've seen.

Hi Alison, I love you too.  I never, ever, miss your show.  How you 'touch' a 46 year old single hetero white male I have some rationale but my demo is much more O&A or Adam.  This Jimmy Norton show is especially great, you make him talk to a woman with no men around, that's perfect, you hit a home run (again).  I'd leave you a review on iTunes but I can't seem to figure out how to do so.  You are 10 stars to me.  You are just not afraid to talk to men in a man's context! I use a washcloth and my favorite color is also blue.  I am also very much a socialist and live in the suburban Orlando area.

Wow. My one lame attempt at sarcastic complaint sure has struck a chord with certain people. Thank you, fellow internet posters, for filling the void that is my need for attention. I obviously dislike this podcast, as I listen each week just so that I can come to the message board and mock its host and her listeners. No, wait, I am not a mythical monster who can smell the blood of a true believer and whose massive body turns to stone at the merest hint of sunlight (Google it, it'll be slightly entertaining). However, as a fan (not sarcasm), I do appreciate the protective instinct of the audience, it's somewhat heartening. Well, I'm off, I have to go tell Ira Glass what a douche he is. I've been telling him so every week since the mid 90s, because I just can't stand that hacky little show he's been toiling at, and to which I only listen to find faullt. With? I'm lost on, in? my prepositions and their proper placement. So, goodnight and good luck (I came up with that, by the way).

finding it really difficult to not dislike this Norton guy. I know everyone needs a gimmick, and I guess his is to say shocking, perverted things, but I think he needs a little wit, humor and self deprecation to mix in with his act, because all I hear is an ugly, overweight, very unfunny person saying the grossest of things. I can get on a mic and say, “i just put my finger in my butt and licked it” and “sometimes I follow doggies around the park and when their owners miss picking up their turds I bend down on all fours and lick them with my tongue” but what would the point be? That seems to be all Norton does, say stupid gross stuff while not mixing in any sarcasm that would make him likable. The one-dimensional way he delivers the material we're supposed to find shocking, e.g., “who doesn't like a tranny every once in a while! ha!” makes me doubt whether he's even serious. He could at least add some insight into his revelations about past relationships that would make the average listener think, “oh, I can relate to that because I've had that emotion and been there” but really the only thing we can really garner from his relationship talk is that somewhere out there is a dude named norton who, well, “goes there” I guess.

    just me or everyone?

Hi Alison:  I just wanted to say that I think you are awesome!  I love your sense of humor and listening to you every day on the ACS.  I too enjoy poop humor and never get enough of it.  I don't use a wash cloth either and when Jim Norton made the comment about getting his bum extra clean after a BM, I laughed so hard that I cried.  Awesome pod!

Great song you shared last week.  I think we've all had that douchey guy in our lives that we like and later figure out what a loser he was.M

Keep up the great work. You made my day when you read my iTunes comment of the week, thank you!

    Hello Alison and Gary,
Thank you for such wonderful pod!  Alison. you have a great interview style and I love the sense of humor.  I think I'd call it “dry and low” but darn, you pull it off so well.  And Gary, you are doing a great job.  I really like that you are more vocal because you've got some good dingers and some great questions for guests.

My most perfect example of Alison's humor is when she offered to fill in for Terresa's new Phoenix gig.  Wow!  Is there any tension there?  Don't get me wrong, T was a great co host.  But I like your style a bit more.  You seem less constrained, less formal, and willing to to make a quick comical deduction.  You have to be fast around Adam.  Your podcast stands on it's own two feet though and it's kept me very well entertained as I drive across the western states for a living.

Thank you again and keep up the great work!@47ba64265b8460bf0ebf8f58b0accfd6:disqus

I feel very strongly about this so I had to come find this page to comment. Alison, I just recently began listening to your podcasts (figured I like you on Carolla's show, so why not?) You guys are talking to Jim Norton about annoying things on the Internet.

    Woot.

I HATE this and wish it would go away forever. People don't say it in person so why is this a common response to liking something on the 'net. Do you hate this too?Jessica in Japan
P.S. Thanks for the Podcasts. We have no Sirius/XM and terrible Military radio so Podcasts are keeping me sane
