ARIYNBF 104 with Riki Lindhome

On the fourth episode of Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend, actress, comedian, member of funny musical duo Garfunkel and Oates and fellow podcast host Riki Lindhome joins the show to talk about relationships, Valentine’s Day, the Nuvaring, the way you have to do fun stuff like go on trips and eat at nice restaurants even if you’re single, workaholism, setting boundaries, therapy, whether relationships make you less productive and the way Kinko’s doesn’t suck, which is nuts since everyone knows Kinko’s sucks. In fact as I sit here writing this I’m still baffled at the way an otherwise intelligent woman such as Riki Lindhome can insist Kinko’s is a pleasant place to go when it’s pretty much the opposite of a pleasant place to go. Have I mentioned I hate Kinko’s? God, I hate it. But Riki doesn’t.

Please enjoy this episode and give it a good rating and tell all your friends!

Also please love the hell out of our sponsors! What sponsors you ask? You can get to all of them from the sidebar on this page but also you can do it here by going to GameflyAmazonEndless and Adam and Eve (NSFW).

Riki was an awesome guest. I really got the impression that Alison and Riki really liked talking with each other, and I felt more like I was eavesdropping on a conversation between friends at a coffee shop.

I love your podcast and all the haters can get bent – it kind of bums me out that you have to explain/justify things! You do you, girl. You’re awesome. And I kinda wish you were my actual new best friend.
Um regarding birth control, I had to quit that stuff because it totally made me the sad blob. I slept all the time and was basically Debbie downer. I haven’t found an alternative yet, but it’s gotta be out there. Riki mentioned nuvaring and I’ve heard great things about that from others too.

10 minutes into it:  The show is great.  No need to navel gaze.  Don't listen to all the criticism. Don't worry about the format, the content is king, baby.  You don't sound smug.  Haters gonna hate, you waste your energy dealing with it.  Have some self confidence and don't try and please everyone or you'll please no-one.

At some point, people want Springsteen to stop telling the story behind the song and start singing it.  Well, not me, since Springsteen went talentless 20 years ago, but certainly some people.  Penn Jillette does the same thing – he talks a lot about what the show's going to be about and the direction it's going to take.   There's adventure in discovery, and I prefer everything AFTER the first ten minutes.   I listened to all of the prologue, but only because it was very car crashy.   I suppose there's entertainment in that too.  Could be that you're overthinking the description of the show.   Relationships 'n shit covers it all.

Having said all that, I enjoyed this podcast.  And until Riki Lindhome gets a staring tole in some Christmas movie as funny-sexy Christmas elf, Hollywood is wasting our time.

Enjoying the show so far. My one year old gives a thumbs up to the music too. This is a crazy private thing to write but I just say no to “the pill”. I was on it for ten years and when I stopped to try and get pregnant I suffered a slew of bad symptoms and it took almost a year to get my body back on track and to get pregnant. Of course I've heard a lot of people have a great experience but for those of us who are very sensitive to hormones it's just not a great area to mess with and I'm not going back.

Oh and architects rock! I'm a bit biased since I am one, but I think you're version is more a movie role than a real live architect 🙂

  10. Alison Rosen March 5, 2012 at 10:12 am #

I wish I could just say no! I said no for years and years but because I have endometriosis (recently discovered) I have to be on some kind of hormone manipulation to prevent the disease from ultimately compromising my ovaries and tubes and whatnot. I'm not loving the options. I will rethink my architect stance and thank you to your one year old!

    Hi Alison,

Really liking the show so far. You are my favourite part of Adam's show too (but don't tell him that!)

Anyway, re: the pill. I would really really suggest trying a new pill. I was on Allesse (or something like that) for a couple months and it made me completely suicidal. I had no idea why I was feeling that way, there was no real purpose and I had no idea a birth control pill could do that. I ended up going to therapy and shit because I needed help and then I got dumped because of my moods and behaviour. Since I didn't have a boyfriend then, I went off of the pill and oh my god. It was like the clouds just parted. Within a month I was back to normal, it was really fucking weird.

NOW I'm on the Nuva Ring. Which is the lowest dose hormones available in any hormonal birth control. It's awesome. No weight gain, and no mood swings, and trust me, I do NOT respond well to hormonal BC.

As for the guy feeling it, yes they can. However, you can take it out for 3 hours max and just put it back in after. I highly recommend it.

    Good luck!

Just wanted to say that I agree with you 100% about Alison's intro to the show. Alison always seems to do this type of thing, and that is probably why I find her so likable. She lets the haters get under her skin, I think, and tries very hard to win them over. Alison doesn't realize that she already is more likeable than Sandra Bullock. That's my opinion anyway.

Also, totally agree with you about Riki being a funny-sexy Christmas elf! She would have been a better choice than Zooey Deschanel in the movie Elf. There is something about her smile that just says, “Look at me! If I'm dressed up like a Christmas elf, you can't resist me!” Riki is not only a hot mama, but her intelligent sense of humor is damn sexy!

Hey Alison, that first 10 minutes of the podcast was you feeding the trolls. The worst thing a performer can do is let themselves be robbed of their confidence. People are rating this podcast high on iTunes and it’s doing well in the download numbers. That should be a clear indication of what your average listener thinks of you and your show.

Those guys who are trolling you on Twitter and in your comments section don’t have legitimate qualms with your show. They just get off on hurting you.

I’ve worked in the media business for close to a decade and know talent when I hear it.  Your interview skills are excellent, and you’re good on air, which is rare for a person who cut their teeth as a writer. Keep up the good work and ignore the morons.

Big fan! I love listening to your humor and point of view, but let's stop the charade, YOU NEED THERAPY! You are smart, extremely attractive, you have the ability to carry a conversation, but you have this stupid, I am not good enough, self pity, bullshit attitude. 99% of the women in the world would be happy with one of those 3 abilities and you have all of them. You talk about therapy all the time, but don't go. It is like the people that talk about how they are good christians but never go to church. Love the show.

    Hey Alison!
Just wanted to let you know that I was put on the pill about 2 years ago… cant remember what it was called, but it was a very low dose of hormones. Instantly I began to gain weight and my skin freaked out, but the reason I stopped taking it was because of the depression. For a while I thought it was just me because I had no idea that depression could be caused by birth control, but once I quit the pill the feelings went away. I hesitate to try another pill since I had those crazy side effects on such a low dose.
Anyway, Love the podcast! Keep it up!

I vote for you adopting a sign off to wrap up each show (Maron indirectly accused you of “trailing off”). How about something simple like “I'm Alison Rosen and I'm Your New Best Friend.”  Or, if you have a guest, maybe “I'm Alison Rosen and [guest] is my new best friend.” or “I'm Alison Rosen and me and [guest] are new best friends.”

Alison, so not let critics shape your show. Be true to yourself and find your audience that way.
In the end your show will be much better for it.
You do not need the critics.

Who cares is they don't like what you are doing?.
Focus on those of us who do appreciate you for who you are.

I think your show is terrific and you do not sound like an asshole in any way shape or form.

Love that you have your own show!  Just starting to listen to this one and had to comment – I started on birth control when I was young because I never had regular periods so I never knew any different and assumed I was just a depressed/insanely moody person.  Then, three years ago at age 32 I was taken off the pill due to high blood pressure.  At first it was even worse but about 6 months later I felt more normal than I ever have.  It was ahh-ma-zing.  Up until my recent nuptials I just used the pull out and pray birth control method.  I can't imagine going back on any sort of hormone tricking pill.

On being limited vs. a generalist, people have told me that my tiny little podcast needs a theme/constant topic, also, so I've struggled with this. My response is, “What was Tom Snyder's theme? What's David Letterman's theme?” And they tell me the difference is those guys were famous and I'm not. But relationships are a heavy angle for your fun image, in my opinion. I like the Alison that was jamming on the jam jars, playing her drums, and wearing reindeer antlers. Relationship woes is something I see a licensed psychiatrist like Dr. Phil handling. In other words, IMO, feel free to drop the relationship angle and just have fun like you did on UStream. Hope my comment doesn't mess up your hormone levels.

Love the show, Alison.  The format and theme of the show don't matter as much when the host and guests are smart and funny.

Hi Alison…I Just wanted to say your podcast is great. Also i really enjoyed you talking to Riki Lindhome..especially when you two were talking about your past relationships. Thank you for what both of you said. My relationship ended 3 years ago and i think i am just too scared to get into another one now because of how much i was hurt. And now i am a 22 year old male..and starting to get my career in computers going. You girls talking about that made me feel a lot better about it, so thank you. I actually started to fall in love with Riki, i feel the same way she does about things..but anyway thank you for that.

I want to say that I really enjoy this podcast.  It provides a source for entertainment which revolves around analyzing emotions and, as you said, dating.  I think that’s important, and I enjoy it.

Another brilliant podcast.  Riki is really intelligent, which I didn't quite realize from her appearance on Adam's podcast.  Anyway, really appreciated the honest relationship talk and frank self-analysis from you ladies.  Thanks for consistently putting out great content!

Personally, I'd rather gain weight from being on birth control than from being pregnant!

I totally agree with this. Alison is one of those girls who's super smart but she ends up using her big brain to question herself. I'll give you a few years to untie the mental knots, but after that I expect you to be some mix between Dr. Ruth and Diane Sawyer, but way funnier.

Alison,  I am going to assume that you have chosen not to rethink your “architect stance” being that you continue to slander and defame all architects as EVIL on the world's most popular pod cast.  What did we ever do to you?  How can the architects across America right the wrong that has been done?  I am sure you have many fans that are architects, I am one of them.  However, for my part, I am having a hard time continuing to listen to your show knowing that you take any opportunity you can to describe a person you have never met as evil.  No architect has ever sacrificed a human child to the gods of design … as far as you know.

I just want to add that it's the nice guys (also) that you have to be careful with because they are so afraid of hurting other people that they wait for the last possible moment to tell you how they really feel and they just drop it like a bomb…just a thought.
